
I felt that I had to develop my own sound in the
same way as Benny Benjamin, Al Jackson, Ringo Starr, and Charlie
Watts had developed their own sounds. I always like the
simplicity of their playing, the essentially ingredient to make
a record work. Those kinds of drummers are the best kind.
People think that if it's simple, something is lacking, and
that's not true. It takes more to be able to play that
way. Don't confuse simplicity with stupidity. It's
not because you're inept that you're playing simply, it's
because you're smart as your accompanying other musicians.
There is nothing better than hypnotising an audience with a
groove and you'll never get a better sensation! Listen to
the song and it will dictate to you what you should be playing. –
